Big Surprise, Blair Wins

Looks like its official, Britain’s Labour Party held on to its lead in Parliament just enough to ensure keeping Blair in office. I really don’t have anything to say one way or the other on the British PM — except that he’s a hell of a lot more eloquent than our “benevolent” dictator — but being in the UK for the last couple weeks of this election was pretty interesting.

Iraq was a bigger issue in the UK election that it seemed to be here in the states during our last election. The Conservative leaders went on and on about the legality of the invasion and how Blair misled the people into war (sound familiar…yeah, it didn’t work for him either). There was the usual prattle about health care, jobs, and the economy (no real issues, just imagery), but there were a lot less dirty personal attacks than our campaigns had. The UK process was by no means pretty, but it wasn’t as disgustingly showy and scum-ridden as our electoral process.

As much noise as everyone made about Iraq having the possibility of unseating Blair, no-one I talked to when I was in the UK (locals and ex-pats alike) felt there was really any risk of such. The polls always had him with a solid lead, even with the very progressive Liberal Democrat party sapping points from Labour I’m sure (Nader couldn’t spoil the election over there).

Back to my old routine

Well its Friday morning and I am once again on the BART on my way to work. It feels good to again be productive while in motion. After getting back from my two week Europe/Vegas work trip I had a lot of daylight errands to run, so I’ve been driving the Prius down to work for the past couple of days and keeping a generally frantic pace. I’m on the downward side of a huge pile of work though because last night I took the final in my Stat class, so today is essentially the first day of my “summer vacation” (aka, only 50 hour weeks as opposed to 60+ hours).

Lots of things I will undoubtedly write about in the next few days, but here are some micro-updates:

  • Alexis has accepted another archaeology contract for a five month dig just after her current project wraps up. At least this time she won’t be in the middle of nowhere, they’ll be based out of Barstow. Oh wait, I guess she still will be in the middle of nowhere.
  • My little niece in New Zealand is a hairs breadth away from getting her black belt in Tai Kwon Do (she’s 14, and she can kick your ass). There is apparently some rumor of her trainer putting her in the running for the 2008 Olympic team. That would be sweet.
  • The friend exodus has almost completed. While I was gone another two really close friends packed up and left the Bay Area for all parts south. Apparently my last deserter friend has paid his last rent check and is the final packing stages now as well. I need to post a personal ad on Craigslist or something.
  • The house is still standing, although the back yard has become an overgrown mass of weeds with all the rain that we got this winter. I’m setting a personal goal to at least wrap up all of the hard-scaping that is left before Alexis comes home.
  • Our Southwest Road Trip has been postponed due to Alexis’s next project starting right after the current one. We’ve got an extra long weekend in Hawaii planned for later in June though as there is an extended wedding reception for a friend on Oahu. I need to decide if I’m going to spend my time kite surfing, wind surfing, or just regular old long boarding.
  • Work got me a new 15″ PowerBook just before I left, which is bigger than I had hoped for but is definitely growing on me. Of course, the work VPN software doesn’t work with Tiger so I’m in a wait and see period before upgrading to 10.4.

Yeah, I know, I’m a total geek for mentioning the laptop alongside all those other things. Oh well, you all knew that already.
