Victory Bill

aspolito pointed out this article about and early draft of the “VICTORY” (Vital Interdiction of Criminal Terrorist Organizations) making it’s ways through Congressional offices before they reconvene next month.

In a nutshell, the bill reinvents drug offenses as terrorism crimes. The ho-hum label of “controlled substance offense” will get a glossy makeover as many routine drug crimes become elevated into crimes of “Narcoterrorism.”

Sounds like Orin Hatch hired a marketing consultant. Luckily, sentimental naming doesn’t work on everyone:

and I still say if the total wording of the victory act was
“fluffy bunnies are cute” I’d be against it on name alone

How much do you want to bet that DHS Terrorist Threat Level will go to Orange the week this hits the floor for a vote?

With Herr Ashcroft out working the troops to avoid any further additional limitations being placed on the Bush Administration’s initial attempt to destroy a huge portion of the individual protections granted under our Constitution, why should anyone be surprised that the administration would try to extend those crippling rules to areas of activity whose connection to terrorism is so tenuous as to be ridiculous (except for the fact the consequences are so utterly devastating to the protections that have been developed under our laws). Anyone supporting this proposed law should himself/herself be incarcerated without access to counsel and stripped of all their rights as citizens (including their elected office). The whole thing is so incredibly scary - coming from a Senator who one generally thinks at least has some basic knowledge about the value of the protections given citizens by the Constitution. Surely what is going on today is exactly what went on in the early days of Hitler’s rule. Where is the Bush Administration taking us?
