Economist article on SCO/Linux lawsuit

The Economist had an interesting summary article on the current SCO’s current Linux lawsuits.

In terms of impact, however, it is an issue. SCO has caused enough uncertainty that technology consultancies, such as Gartner and Yankee Group, are advising clients to wait and see before adopting Linux.

SCO’S stock price has increased 1500% in the past six months for some unknown reason (this isn’t a lawsuit they can win). Many of my friends have started shorting them in anticipation of the inevitable crash.

UPDATE: Look at how much money SCO execs have been making off their stock lately…

ELF Strikes Emeryville

Breaking News: Explosions Rock Emeryville Bio-Tech Firm.

The Chiron building on Hollis St in Emeryville was the target of two or three outdoor bombs last night. It is believed these were the work of the Earth Liberation Front (although I haven’t seen any official claims of responsibility). These are the same people who have been torching housing developments encroaching on the desert and setting fire to SUV dealerships in Southern California.

I went to their web site (so I’m sure my IP is logged in some DHS database now) and the majority of items on their front page are either links to news articles about what they’ve done, or instructions for making a bomb. There is almost nothing on there about what their beliefs are or why they are doing this. Yet another group of eco-terrorists who couldn’t tell you the real environmental details and care less for their stated cause than for the publicity they get out of it.

UPDATE: Turns out this was committed by an arm of the Animal Liberation Front, not the Earth Liberation Front. Sweet, an eco-terrorist group named after an 80s TV puppet!

Random things like this keep happening, and need to be recorded!

A Horrible Tax Loophole

Thanks to recent changes in tax law, people buying the largest SUVs — those weighing at least 6,000 pounds — may write off more than half the cost if they use the vehicle mostly for business and meet other conditions. The original tax incentive, from the 1980s, was meant to help farmers buy equipment.

Gas price check…yup, still high…

This Guardian UK article sheds light on another reason that oil/gas prices continue to remain very high (as opposed the broken pipeline story which US media has been pushing…ignoring the fact that that pipeline transfers oil west to east…).

Looks like our Government — and several other governments around the world — have been increasing their massive strategic oil reserves; buying up extra oil on the market at the highest prices we’ve paid in ten years.

Our progress in Iraq

It was announced yesterday that more U.S. Soldiers have been killed in Iraq since the official “end of combat operations” than were killed during the war itself.

The administration says not to worry though because resistance is only happening in the area between Baghdad and Tikrit. No mention of the fact that that’s what, two thirds of the population?

Oh and hey, have you noticed all the resistance the Taliban has been putting up in Afghanistan?

Victory Bill

aspolito pointed out this article about and early draft of the “VICTORY” (Vital Interdiction of Criminal Terrorist Organizations) making it’s ways through Congressional offices before they reconvene next month.

In a nutshell, the bill reinvents drug offenses as terrorism crimes. The ho-hum label of “controlled substance offense” will get a glossy makeover as many routine drug crimes become elevated into crimes of “Narcoterrorism.”

Sounds like Orin Hatch hired a marketing consultant. Luckily, sentimental naming doesn’t work on everyone:

and I still say if the total wording of the victory act was
“fluffy bunnies are cute” I’d be against it on name alone

How much do you want to bet that DHS Terrorist Threat Level will go to Orange the week this hits the floor for a vote?

Desk for Sale - Cheap!

I’m getting rid of my old computer desk that has been sitting in my garage since we moved. Its a really nice desk, but I just felt like I wanted something else in the new house. It has a cabinet for a tower case, slide out keyboard/mouse shelf, and a file drawer on the bottom. Served me well for a long time. Standard dimensions for a desk: 5′ long, 2′1″ deep. Birch finish with a dark grey top. One word of warning, it’s heavy.

Available for a limited time at the really low price of $50, I’ll even help you move it! If I can’t find any of my friends to take it though, I’ll increase the price and list it on Craigslist.

First come, first serve, act now!
